How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is in full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. 3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor.
